Deleting your account

You can delete your Ghostkey account yourself, from any device you’re signed in on, whenever you like. You don’t need to email anyone.

Please read the next section before you start, though. Deleting an account is immediate and permanent. There’s no grace period and no recovery, and nobody at Ghostkey can bring it back for you.

What gets deleted

Everything on the account goes, from the server and from every device, all at once:

  • every book, with all its chapters, notes and saved versions
  • world bibles, entity pages and portraits
  • outlines, story cards, chapter plans and boards
  • PhantomMemory conversations
  • your media library: pictures, clips and uploaded files
  • comps, pitch material and covers

Your email address is freed up as well, so you could sign up with it again later. That would be a brand-new, empty account.

If you have a paid subscription, it ends the same day. The unused part of the billing period isn’t refunded. If you only want to stop paying and keep your books, cancel the plan from the same account screen and leave the account alone.

Before you go: export what you want to keep

Deleting doesn’t make a copy for you, so save your manuscripts first.

  1. On the dashboard, open the book.
  2. Click Export.
  3. Pick a format (DOCX, PDF, EPUB or TXT). Leave Include notes ticked to keep your notes in the same file.
  4. Save the file somewhere that isn’t Ghostkey.

Do this for each book. Exports contain your chapters and notes. They don’t include world bible entries, boards or chats, so copy out anything from those that you want to keep.

Delete on the desktop or web app

  1. On the dashboard, click your email address in the top-right corner. This opens Account and billing.
  2. At the top of that window, across from your email address, click the red bin button. Pointing at it spells out Delete account.
  3. The first screen, Delete your account?, lists what will be removed. If everything looks right, click Continue.
  4. On the second screen, This can’t be undone, type DELETE in capital letters.
  5. Click Delete account.

When it’s done you’re signed out, and every other device signed in to the account is signed out within a few minutes.

Delete on your phone

  1. On the shelf, tap your email address at the top right to open Account.
  2. Tap the red bin button at the top, across from your email address. (Sign out is at the bottom, well away from it.)
  3. Read Delete your account? and tap Continue.
  4. Type DELETE and tap Delete account.

Changed your mind halfway?

Tap Keep my account on either confirmation screen and nothing happens. Nothing is removed until you press the final Delete account button.

If something goes wrong

If you see Your account wasn’t deleted, the deletion didn’t go through and none of your data was touched. That usually means we couldn’t reach the payment provider to end your subscription, and we won’t delete an account that might keep billing you. Wait a moment and try again. If it keeps failing, write to support@ghost-key.app and we’ll sort it out.
